Food poisoning occurs when you consume food or drink that’s been contaminated by bacteria, viruses or the toxins produced by some bugs.
If you’ve ever had a bout of food poisoning, you’ll know how unpleasant it can be and common symptoms include nausea and vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, headache and fever.
In most cases the illness passes in a few days and the main treatment is making sure you don’t get dehydrated, which can happen very quickly in small children. But some forms of food poisoning can be very serious and potentially fatal.
