US: Can the FSMA improve safety of frozen berry production?

FPSC: Can the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) provide a framework to improve practices and boost exports for Chilean raspberry producers? Megan Poinski from Food Dive points out that the FSMA has stringent requirements on “water quality, employee health and hygiene”, and suggests that addressing those issues may help Chile boost slumping raspberry exports. Importers and regulators in Australia and New Zealand would no doubt be interested to see improvements on the ground in berry exporting nations after high profile product recalls of frozen berries in early 2015. Food Standards Australia and New Zealand released a new guidance for thermal inactivation of hepatitis A virus in berries in May 2016.
