The Packer: Consumers are much more concerned about raw chicken and raw beef being contaminated than raw fruits and vegetables, according to a new . The survey, conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, shows that 66% of surveyed consumers said raw chicken and 41% of consumers said raw beef were “very likely” to have germs that make people sick, compared with 6% who thought the same of raw vegetables and 9% who had that concern about raw fruit.

The study revealed 66% of consumers say they purchase bagged lettuce marked “prewashed” or “ready to eat.” Fifty-four percent of consumers who purchased lettuce labelled as “prewashed” rinsed or washed it, while 43% said they ate it as is, without washing.
