NZ: ‘Talking’ bacteria lift their immunity
Otago Daily Times: New University of Otago research shows bacteria once dismissed as “simple” and “boring” can actually boost their defences to viral threats by “talking” to each other. Associate Prof Peter Fineran, of the Otago microbiology and immunology department, said some bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella, which pose threats to food safety, were once “written off” as boringly predictable. But recent insights, including from his own research, showed such bacteria “work as groups, not just as individuals”.
