Food Safety Information Council: Far more people die in Australia each year due to food poisoning than from shark attacks (86 food poisoning deaths a year compared with 13 fatal shark attacks between 2012 and 2016). That’s not to mention the estimated annual 4.1 million cases of food poisoning, 31,920 hospitalisations, 1 million visits to doctors, 300,000 prescriptions for antibiotics and 2.1 million days of lost work.
