From the Desk of the CEO

Welcome to Volume 10 of Fresh & Safe News

As we reflect on the year that has been, I am immensely proud of the progress we’ve made in elevating fresh produce food safety discussions across Australia and New Zealand. This year, we celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the Fresh Produce Safety Centre (FPSC), a milestone highlighted by the success of our inaugural International Fresh Produce Safety Symposium.

Your overwhelmingly positive feedback on the event reinforced FPSC’s critical role in fostering collaboration and advancing food safety best practices across the industry.

Our work through the Hort Innovation Frontiers – Horticulture Food Safety Initiative (HFSI) is now halfway through its three-year journey, and we’re already seeing meaningful progress, particularly in connecting with small-scale growers. Expanded social media outreach and strengthened stakeholder engagement have helped us deepen connections across the sector. Additionally, the launch of a comprehensive review of the?Guidelines for Fresh Produce Food Safety?sets a strong foundation for continued growth and excellence in 2025.

In this edition, you’ll find updates on the HFSI, including industry engagement plans and our growing Community of Practice. We also share resources and links to help primary production and processors prepare for the new food safety standards for melons, berries and leafy vegetables set to take effect in Australia in February 2025. Don’t miss details about our free Fresh Produce Food Safety Helpdesk and outreach initiatives, including the International Fresh Produce Safety Symposium in July 2025.

Looking ahead, FPSC remains dedicated to building trust, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation within the industry. With a focus on sustainable operations, industry capability building, and research-driven initiatives, the year ahead is full of opportunity. Stay tuned for information about a new FPSC podcast launching early next year, featuring engaging stories with growers, distributors, brand owners, industry bodies, food safety standard owners, retailers, researchers, regulators and leading food safety experts from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

As the festive season approaches, I wish you and your families a safe and joyous holiday. Please note our team will break for the year on Friday 20th December and return Monday 6th January 2025. May the new year bring success, collaboration, and prosperity for all.

Warm regards,

Farzana Adams

Horticulture Food Safety Initiative Update

with Susannah Roelofsz

The Horticulture Food Safety Initiative (HFSI) aims to elevate Food Safety Standards in the ANZ Fresh Produce Industry with an initial focus on melons, berries, and leafy vegetables. We are pleased to share our latest progress update on this project.

Fresh Produce Safety Community of Practice (COP)

Our Community of Practice continues to grow with over 80 members representing the fresh produce supply chain in Australia and New Zealand. This group fosters collaboration and knowledge exchange among Stakeholders across the supply chain and ANZ. As our community continues to grow, we are looking to form sub-COPs with specific focus areas. Join the conversation and stay connected with the latest industry insights!

Industry engagement plan and outreach activities

Our industry engagement plan, initially focusing on melons, berries and leafy vegetables, is now underway. With the implementation of new food safety standards in Australia (4.2.7 for berries, 4.2.8 for leafy vegetables and 4.2.9 for melons) in February 2025. As part of the industry engagement plan, outreach has included a range of in person roadshows and online events. These events have mostly focused on preparing growers for the new standards including presentations on food safety practices and compliance requirements, supported by materials like checklists and access to best practice guidance. Additionally training materials for Industry Development Officers (IDOs) and Regional Development Officers (RDOs) have been developed as part of building a food safety extension team, focusing on berries and leafy vegetables. Training sessions for these officers were held in November 2024, equipping them to further disseminate information to growers.

AgVic Horticulture Standards Webinar

It was great to be part of the recent Horticulture Standards Webinar hosted by Agriculture Victoria. The session featured updates on the Primary production and processing standards for berries, melons and leafy vegetables, coming into effect in February 2025 in Australia. Together with SP Singh of NSW DPIRD and Shane Herbertson of AgVic, we covered food safety risks, compliance requirements, and valuable resources to support industry practices. A big thank you to the organisers and attendees for an informative session and Q&A.

National Farmers Federation Market Day

Held at Brisbane Markets, this informative and engaging session on Thursday 12th December included briefings from Brisbane Markets and Fresh Markets Australia (FMA) on national projects and priorities.

NSW Vegetable Field Innovation Day

I took part in the NSW Vegetable Innovation Day at the NSW DPIRD Local Land Services Demonstration Farm in Richmond today, along with our Communications & Events Officer Jody Sharpe. The event showcased the latest varieties of sweet corn and zucchini, and was attended by growers, agronomists and industry professionals.

Comprehensive Review of the?Guidelines for Fresh Produce Food Safety?Underway

We are pleased to announce that the comprehensive review of the?Guidelines for Fresh Produce Food Safety?is officially underway. This significant initiative reflects our commitment to providing the fresh produce industry with the most up-to-date, evidence-based practices to ensure the safety of fresh fruit and vegetables across Australia and New Zealand.

A technical review team, comprised of leading food safety experts and industry representatives, has been established to spearhead the project. The team is dedicated to ensuring the revised guidelines are both practical and relevant, incorporating the latest scientific research and industry insights.

A detailed project plan has been mapped out to guide the review process, with a strong emphasis on consultation and collaboration. Key milestones include scheduled opportunities for stakeholder feedback to ensure the revised guidelines address the diverse needs of the fresh produce industry. This collaborative approach will engage producers, processors, food safety scheme owners, retailers, researchers, and regulatory bodies, ensuring the final guidelines reflect a broad range of perspectives and expertise.

In addition to revising the core guidelines, the updated 2025 version will include a standalone appendix outlining the regulatory and compliance frameworks across Australia and New Zealand. This dedicated appendix aims to serve as a practical reference for industry members navigating the regulatory landscape, helping ensure alignment with legal requirements and best practices.

Our goal is to launch the updated?Guidelines for Fresh Produce Food Safety 2025?at the International Fresh Produce Safety Symposium, taking place in Sydney on 29-30 July 2025. This event will provide an ideal platform to showcase the revised guidelines and their pivotal role in supporting the industry to deliver safe, high-quality fresh produce to consumers.

FPSC looks forward to keeping you updated as this important project progresses. We encourage all industry stakeholders to participate in the consultation process when opportunities arise. Together, we can continue to strengthen food safety practices and enhance consumer trust in the fresh produce supply chain.

For more information about the guidelines review or to express your interest in contributing to the consultation process, please contact us at?ceo@fpsc-anz.com.
