AU: Hepatitis A death linked to frozen pomegranate recall

ABC News: A South Australian woman has died after contracting hepatitis A from recalled frozen pomegranate. SA Health chief medical officer and chief public health officer Professor Paddy Phillips revealed the 64-year-old woman died last Wednesday after "some time" in hospital.

AU: Frozen berries Hepatitis A Virus outbreak fact sheet (2017)

An outbreak of foodborne illness attributed to hepatitis A virus (HAV) has taken place in Australia. At least four people have become infected. The source of the outbreak is 300 gram packs of Creative Gourmet Frozen Mixed Berries with a best-before date of 15 January 2021. This product was recalled nationally on 2nd June 2017 as a precaution.

US: Is the food industry doing enough to control allergens?

Food Safety News: A recent spate of [US] food product recalls due to undeclared allergenic agents illustrates the problem the food industry has in preventing allergen exposures.

While food manufacturers usually have allergen controls in place, protecting those in the population with food allergies can be particularly challenging. Undeclared allergens are considered a significant chemical hazard in food and thus a critical control in many processes, yet most product recalls are due to undeclared allergens.
