Food Safety News: University of Georgia food scientist Xiangyu Deng has created a system that can identify subtypes of foodborne pathogens in a fraction of the time taken by traditional methods. Quick detection and pathogen fingerprinting can save lives by helping to identify foodborne illness outbreaks and their victims, thereby making it easier to contain outbreaks.

US FDA: The FDA is investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illnesses likely linked to chopped romaine lettuce sourced from the winter growing areas in Yuma, Arizona. Most people reported eating a salad at a restaurant, and romaine lettuce was the only common ingredient identified among the salads eaten. No specific grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified at this time.
