NZ: ‘Shut down food businesses that fail food safety’ – expert

Stuff.co.nz: Auckland food service consultant Mark Collins says it’s outrageous that businesses with a food hygiene D rating are not closed until they are up to scratch. Auckland Council has about 20 D-rated food businesses published on its website – they can continue selling food while concerns are fixed. Another five places graded E have been closed until they meet standards.

UAE: Spinneys launches traceable labelling initiative

Hotelier Middle East: Spinneys has partnered with leading agricultural assurance organisation GlobalG.A.P., to introduce a new labelling system to provide customers with traceability on the food they are purchasing. The trial, which will initially be on a selected number of stone fruits, will see a GlobalG.A.P. Number (GGN) label added to applicable products showing the origins of the food, resulting in farm to fork transparency.

US: New DNA technique suggests Salmonella took out the Aztecs

Food Safety News: Research, published Monday in the journal Nature, reports DNA analysis has unmasked Salmonella enterica bacteria as the cause of a 16th century epidemic that affected large parts of Mexico and wiped out an estimated 800,000 people in the Aztec Empire.
