UAE bans import of vegetables, fruits from select countries

Gulf News: The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) issued an advisory noting that it has “banned imports of certain vegetables and fruits from select countries with effect from May 15, 2017 as those products have been found to contain pesticide residues in excess of permissible limits”.

AU: Poisonous mushrooms growing in Melbourne

AU: Are you more likely to be killed by a shark or food poisoning in Australia?

Food Safety Information Council: Far more people die in Australia each year due to food poisoning than from shark attacks (86 food poisoning deaths a year compared with 13 fatal shark attacks between 2012 and 2016). That’s not to mention the estimated annual 4.1 million cases of food poisoning, 31,920 hospitalisations, 1 million visits to doctors, 300,000 prescriptions for antibiotics and 2.1 million days of lost work.

Lincoln University: Professor of Toxicology, Ravi Gooneratne, says contamination of fresh produce is emerging as a major food safety challenge. Recently, several listeriosis outbreaks have been linked to fresh produce contamination around the world. Additionally, studies have detected L. monocytogenes in fresh produce samples and even in some minimally processed vegetables.
